Sam Leach Machine-assisted memory of Harewood Farm, Meadows

oil on linen

51 x 51 cm

Harewood is a farm in the Adelaide Hills that was formerly owned by geologist and Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson. My grandparents and then my aunt managed it for many years, and I spent a large part of my childhood there.

I trained an artificial intelligence model by inputting a series of images of my own previous paintings and photos of the farm and the area. The computer learned how to produce new images that resembled the place. I sorted through thousands of proposed compositions until I found one that closely re-created the look and feel of the place as I remember it and developed this painting from it.
