Yurpiya Lionel Anumara

acrylic on linen

170 x 99 cm

I am painting my family’s place called Anumara, near Irrunytju (Wingellina), in Western Australia. Anumara is also the name for a type of caterpillar and Anumara is the tjukurpa place for this caterpillar.

When I am painting I am thinking like the caterpillars, and creating anumara tjina tjuta (many tracks), like they are crawling, crawling everywhere on Country. In the wintertime you can see these caterpillars everywhere. Ara irititja (a long time ago), we cooked them in the fire and ate them, but not anymore.
