Keith Stevens, Taylor Cooper, Witjiti George Piltati–Malara: wanampi tjukurpa

acrylic on linen

202 x 298 cm

Witjiti George and Keith Stevens are cousins, Taylor Cooper their uncle. Mr Stevens was visiting Kaltjiti from his hometown of Nyapari in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia, when they made this work.

The tjilpi pampas (elder men) got talking about painting their story together. And so, they did… George and Stevens share the Piltati wanampi tjukurpa – a story about two water snakes and their homeland. Cooper paints Malara wanampi tjukurpa – the place of the water serpent.

‘This painting is our story, this is our Country, this is our culture.’ – Keith Stevens, Taylor Cooper, Witjiti George, 2020
