Alec Baker, Peter Mungkuri Nganampa Ngura (our Country)

acrylic and ink on linen

198 x 240 cm

I made this painting working together with Alec Baker, my oldest friend. Alec and I have known each other our whole lives. We’ve painted our Country – it’s beautiful Country – with a lot of tjukurpa. We protect our Country, we look after it. The tjilpis (senior men) like us to teach the younger people everything about looking after Country, how to protect culture.

I’ve painted all different types of punu (trees), because they’re a symbol of Aṉangu culture – the tree is where our culture starts. Alec has painted his Country, his story – kalaya tjina (emu tracks), tjukula (rock holes), minyma (women) travelling.
