Neil Haddon The first time again
oil and enamel paint on aluminium panel
180 x 150 cm
This landscape painting is formed by apparently ‘collaged’ elements that can be traced to paintings by Paul Gauguin and John Glover in concert with lesser known figures, both human and abstract. These various elements were gleaned from a period of travel that encompassed North West Tasmania, New York and my birthplace in the UK. The terrain of this landscape presents itself as a place of new encounters: a place where ‘Australian landscape’ may be constituted by competing ideas about what may be called exotic and what may be called endemic.
