Tim Johnson Axis mundi

acrylic on linen

168 x 198 cm

Axis mundi, a Latin term meaning the centre of the world or a place where heaven and earth unite, is both an Eastern and a Western concept. In meditation, consciousness can be aligned with this axis. The painting shows Australian flora and fauna, desert landscape and so on, and suggests that the centre of the world can be found here in Australia. This could be true in a number of ways, but the international success of Aboriginal art and specifically paintings from the Western Desert region, referenced here by the dots, has shown how this can be possible.
