Kieren Karritpul Floating black and white fish traps in still water

lino block and painting on canvas

202 x 132.5 cm

I use my artwork to educate people about Australian Indigenous culture. Our culture is very old and unique, and like all cultures it is always evolving.

In Nauiyu, in the Northern Territory, where I live, we still lead a largely traditional life. Every day we gather our food from the land, collecting fish, turtles, berries and yams, and also use many of the same techniques and tools as my Ancestors, like coal fires and hunting sticks for getting turtles. These woven fish traps were traditionally placed in billabongs and rivers to catch fish. Now we use fishing lines. The colours in the painting refer to a past time.
