Wendy Sharpe Witches with green light

oil on linen

137 x 121.6 cm

I have painted images of the witches from Macbeth since my twenties. Recently, while revisiting sketches for earlier paintings, I thought it was time to do another interpretation. In 2015 I painted a version of the witches when I was invited to participate in a Bell Shakespeare travelling exhibition. That painting, also a Sulman finalist (2016), included a large female bottom that so offended Australian politician Craig Kelly when it was exhibited at Parliament House in Canberra, there was a brief media storm.
