Claudia Nicholson Dream map

watercolour and ink on paper

57 x 76 cm

Dream map is composed from images that draw on both my personal archive of photographs and my dreams. I am creating a fluid cartography of shimmering and diffused bodies, landscapes and sensations. In an analytical essay, Latinx writer José Esteban Muñoz identifies in the works of other artists and poets that dreams can be a way to critique the present by ‘imagining and feeling other spaces and temporalities’.

Dreaming opens us to new ways of being. By painting both my lived and dreamed histories, my dream map builds a vocabulary and aesthetic around my subjectivity as a queer, diasporic woman of colour. Dream map processes the histories that pass through me and gestures towards an alternative future.
