John Fitzgibbon Time, and mystery, and memory
oil on linen
150.5 x 165.6 cm
Where have you gone? The tide is over you,
The turn of midnight water’s over you,
As Time is over you, and mystery,
And memory, the flood that does not flow
Kenneth Slessor ‘Five bells’ 1939
I like to think of painting as a kind of revelation. You start off with the hope of creating something poetic; a poem for the mind and the eye. By stepping away from direct observation and, instead, drawing on the mysterious depths of memory and experience, I have hoped to achieve that goal.
This work is from a series begun over a decade ago.
