Mathew Calandra Stations of the Cross

watercolour, ink and coffee wash on paper

left panel: 76 x 57.3 cm; middle panel: 76 x 56.5 cm; right panel: 76 x 56.5 cm

There was an Easter bunny carrying a cross. A big bad dog bit the rabbit’s leg. The bunny got a little bandage in the tree home. The bunny was wounded but recovered and became alive again.

Mathew Calandra, 2021

Mathew’s triptych of graphic work reimagines Jesus’ struggle as he falls for the second time carrying the crucifix. Through the character of the bunny, Mathew merges myths and characters associated with the Easter story to explore experiences of struggle and recovery.
