The ubiquitous overgrown bougainvillea, with its intense colour and pattern, establishes a space of tension between the internal and external, shelter and exposure. It is uncertain whether the figures in this painting are withdrawing from reality or overwhelmingly caught up in it. My practice explores this complex and wavering nature of self-consciousness through painting, which can visualise the way our mind intensifies and distorts our experiences.
