Maz Dixon Colony

My paintings are an examination of the prescriptive nature of souvenir media. Colony is inspired by two different postcard folders from the late ’60s and early ’70s: one from Albany featuring the carcass of a sperm whale at the local whaling station, and one from a dolphin park on the Gold Coast where an animal plays dead after having a toy gun pointed at it. These photos really stand out from most postcard imagery with the use of violence, both real and fake, as a form of entertainment. They remind the viewer that the relationship between holidaymakers and the world around them isn’t always rosy outside the resort.
