Peter Daverington The new colony part II: from Bierstadt to Neuromancer

oil on canvas

183 x 183 cm

This is the second painting in a two-part series where I have sampled Albert Bierstadt’s painting In the mountains 1867 and juxtaposed it against elements of 21st-century digital architecture and augmented reality now prevalent on mobile devices. Almost appearing as a theatrical stage set, the painting’s ultra-smooth surface and saturated colour suggest the omnipotent glowing screen of our technology-obsessed culture. In this way the work is more of a screenscape than a landscape and aims to expand the traditional landscape-painting genre into a discussion with the digital age.
