Paul Newton Portrait of John Symond AM
oil on linen
137.7 x 120 cm
John Symond is a business entrepreneur and the founder of Aussie Home Loans.
‘Like most Australians, I was aware of his public persona, “Aussie John”, who famously shook up the home loan market in the 1990s by bringing competition to the industry. Later, I heard about his philanthropy and his passion for collecting art,’ says Paul Newton, a professional portraitist and 16-time Archibald finalist.
‘I found him to be a very private man. He was initially reluctant to be the subject of a portrait, but slowly warmed to the idea and, I think, towards the end, genuinely embraced the experience.’
Newton included one of Symond’s favourite paintings, Fred Williams’ Upwey 1967, along with art deco furniture and objet d’art from Symond’s home.
‘However, the main story is told through the depiction of John himself,’ says Newton. ‘His pose is simple and direct. His gaze meets that of the viewer, which I hope communicates strength and determination, as well as warmth and kindness.’
