This portrait by Jan Williamson of surfer Tom Carroll was a finalist in the Daily Telegraph Sporting Portrait Prize, held in conjunction with the Archibald Prize 2000.

Born in Brisbane, Williamson now lives in Sydney. She is married with nine children. She chose Carroll as her subject, she says, 'not only because he is a world champion surfer but also because he depicts the Australian way of life – outdoors, sunshine, surf and sport’.

Carroll toured the world surfing circuit for 14 years and was the World Professional Surfing Champion in 1983 and 1984.

In this portrait, Williamson particularly wanted a feeling of light and warmth contrasting with the cool ocean.
