Chris Antico The captain: Mark Taylor

122 x 122 cm

This portrait by Chris Antico of cricketer Mark Taylor was a finalist in the Daily Telegraph Sporting Portrait Prize, held in conjunction with the Archibald Prize 2000.

Born in 1969, Antico is an abstract artist living and working in Sydney. He chose to paint Taylor because of 'the graceful way in which he retired once he matched Sir Donald Bradman’s runs. He transcends just being a good sport; he’s a good role model off the sporting field as well.’

Several artists had approached Taylor to paint his portrait but he likes abstract art and so agreed to Antico’s request. Antico painted two portraits and let Taylor choose which to enter in the Sporting Prize. He chose the most abstract.
