Judy Cassab Charles Blackman

oil on linen

101 x 76 cm

The subject of this portrait by Judy Cassab is artist Charles Blackman (1928-2018).

Says Cassab about the work: ‘I painted Charles Blackman first of all because he is a great artist – in the sense that he is poetic, lyrical and inventive – and because he is a friend. I painted him in the 1970s and now 20 years later. I have depicted him in his studio wearing his ever-present beret and behind him is a painting he was working on of Papageno, one of the heroes of Mozart’s Magic flute.’

Cassab also exhibited a portrait of Blackman in the 1979 Archibald Prize.
