This portrait of the artist George Haynes (born 1938) is now in the University of Western Australia Art Collection. Allen Muller, who was a young artist when he painted the work, recalled many years later: ‘I asked George if I could paint a portrait of him as a real challenge to myself at the time. I revered George and his work; his use of colour and drawing ability were/are formidable. I didn’t have the courage to ask him for a lot of his time to pose for the work so I took slides and mostly worked from those. I drove to the Perth Hills late one Sunday morning to photograph George at Robert Juniper’s studio. George and Robert had had a big night so George was a bit hungover but was still a powerful presence.’
