In 1978, Greg Soames and Ross Wolfe were at art school together at Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education in Sydney, studying fine arts. They decided to paint each other for the Archibald Prize. Soames’ portrait of Wolfe was selected for the exhibition; Wolfe’s portrait of Soames was not. Wolfe – who would go on to become a well-known arts administrator – did have a portrait of another art school friend, Ian Hunter, in the 1977 Archibald exhibition and a painting in the 1976 Sulman.
