According to the artist Suzanne French-Kennedy, Sydney architect Donald Lane had recently returned from London when they met in 1973 at an Art Gallery Society of NSW function when her painting South Bank ’71 was exhibited in the Sulman Prize. She painted his portrait for the Archibald in 1975 and they would later marry, in 1979.
