This work depicts John McMillan, who was registrar at the New South Wales Institute of Technology (now the University of Technology Sydney) at the time the portrait was painted. The artist, Ralph Podolski, also worked there.

McMillan was appointed lecturer in the NSW Department of Technical Education in 1963, and transferred to NSWIT in 1965. He was appointed senior lecturer in physics and was instrumental in constructing the first mathematics courses, as well as the physics courses, offered by NSWIT. He became registrar in 1967.
