According to the sitter’s family, Reg Campbell was commissioned to paint this portrait of Sir Thomas John Mellis Napier (1882–1976), along with one of his wife, Lady Napier (Dorothy Bell Kay).

Sir Mellis Napier had been appointed lieutenant-governor and chief justice of South Australia in 1942 and chancellor of the University of Adelaide in 1948.
