Reginald Jerrold-Nathan Byram Mansell FRSA

William Arthur Byram Mansell (1893–1977) was an artist and designer who was celebrated for his costume work with American film director Cecil B de Mille. After studying at Julian Ashton’s Sydney Art School, he went to the US in the 1920s, establishing a studio in Honolulu and later in Los Angeles, and executing over 40 commissions to decorate cafes, theatres and cabarets in cities including LA, New York and Chicago. He returned to Sydney in 1925 and opened a textiles studio, and from 1939 to 1947 had a studio in Bowral, New South Wales. In 1954 Mansell became a foundation member of the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales.

Following studies at London’s Royal Academy under John Singer Sargent and William Orpen, Reginald Jerrold-Nathan (1889–1979) was an established portrait painter when he arrived in Sydney in 1924. Having painted members of the royal families of England, Denmark and Iraq, he was well-received in Sydney society.
