Stephanie Manusu (later Marshall, 1927–2017) had recently moved to Sydney from the central western NSW village of Mendooran to work in her cousin’s legal practice when Reginald Jerrold-Nathan painted this portrait. She was living with her aunt, not far from Jerrold-Nathan’s home. More than half a century later, in 2012, Stephanie’s son-in-law, Tim Storrier, would win the Archibald Prize with a self-portrait.
