Now in the Art Gallery of NSW collection, this is a portrait of the artist’s great-niece Rosalind ‘Rosie’ Gowans, aged four. It was one of a series of portraits Amalie Colquhoun painted of the family, including Rosalind’s mother and the five siblings (Jenny, Jim, Eleanor, Rosalind and Catherine).
Amalie Colquhoun was the sister of Rosalind’s maternal grandmother, May Freeman (née Feild). Her portrait of Rosalind’s sister Jenny Gowans, aged two, was exhibited in the 1941 Archibald Prize.
A portrait of Rosalind and Jenny’s father, Gregory Gowans, by Amalie’s husband, AD Colquhoun, was exhibited in the 1935 Archibald.
