Image detail

The subject of this portrait by Esther Paterson is her husband George Hermon Gill (1895–1973), a mariner, naval officer, journalist and writer. It is the third of three portraits of Gill she exhibited in the Archibald Prize; the others were in 1939 and 1940.

The portrait now in the collection of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra is likely to be the one from the 1941 Archibald.
