W B McInnes The artist's daughter

oil on cardboard

61 x 50.5 cm

This is the third of three portraits of his daughter that WB McInnes exhibited in the Archibald Prize; the other two were in 1922 and 1924. Known as Jean, Laura Jean McInnes (later Phillips, 1915-1991) would later study art herself and work as an art teacher.

Interestingly, McInnes has posed his sitter with rosary beads, even though she wasn’t Catholic.
