This portrait of Daniel Mannix (1864-1963) was painted at the artist’s request for entry in the Archibald competition. Mannix was the Catholic archbishop of Melbourne at the time and he and John Hennessy were well acquainted through Hennessy’s work for several churches in the Melbourne archdiocese and his involvement in Catholic life. The painting is now in the collection of Xavier College, Kew.
