Frederick William Leist Dr Bradfield

This portrait by Fred Leist is of engineer John Job Crew Bradfield (1867–1943), best known as the leading proponent of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, of which he oversaw both the design and construction.

Frederick William Leist (1873–1945) was employed as an illustrator for The Bulletin magazine in the 1890s and became a staff artist for The Sydney Mail. Travelling to London in 1908, he worked as an illustrator for The Graphic, while exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts. In 1917, he was appointed as an official war artist to serve with the Australian Imperial Force in France. After returning to Australia in 1926, Leist became the head of painting at the East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School).

The portrait, one of 25 works by Leist shown in the Archibald between 1928 and 1944, is now in the University Art Collection in the Chau Chak Wing Museum at The University of Sydney.
