The background of this portrait by Mary Edwell-Burke of Dorothy Murray has been repainted a different colour since the work was exhibited in the 1927 Archibald Prize.

In January 1928, the Sydney Mail had written: ‘The lady is wearing a jade-green hat and strawberry-coloured velvet cloak against a background of royal blue, and with a blue and white jar of pink roses in front of her.’

This portrait was previously owned by Princes Restaurant in Brisbane before entering the collection of Queensland Art Gallery in 1949, until it was deaccessioned in 2005.
