Mary Walker Miniature (William Macleod)

miniature

Although there are no records of the artist or sitter, an article in The Daily Telegraph of 16 January 1922 about the 1921 Archibald Prize refers to Mary Walker’s portrait of William Macleod (1850-1929). It was one of two portraits of him in the inaugural exhibition; the other was by Mary Edwell-Burke (exhibiting as Mary Edwards).

An artist and cartoonist, Macleod was also managing director of The Bulletin, the magazine founded by JF Archibald.
