Norman Carter (G Sydney Jones)

Based on newspaper articles about the exhibition, this is thought to be one of four works entered by Norman Carter into the inaugural Archibald Prize, although there are no official records of either the artist or subject.

The Daily Telegraph of 16 January 1922 stated: ‘In Mr Carter’s canvases there is nothing to disturb the balance of the composition … his striking portrait of Mr C Sydney Jones [sic] is more freely handled …’ and ‘The representatives of architecture, art and the law fare the best, the portraits of Mr G Sydney Jones, ex-president of the Institute of Architects of New South Wales …’.

The sitter referred to is architect George Sydney Jones (1864-1927).
