Mary Edwell-Burke (William Macleod)

oil

It is known that Mary Edwell-Burke exhibited a work in the inaugural Archibald Prize under the name Mary Edwards, although there are no records of the sitter. An article in The Bulletin of 6 February 1952, however, refers to her 'exhibit for the first competition in 1921’ as a 'portrait of The Bulletin's managing director, William Macleod’ (1850-1929). Macleod himself was an artist and cartoonist.

A second portrait of Macleod, by Mary Walker, was also hung in the 1921 Archibald.
