About
Claude Lorrain has been called the greatest of all
European landscape painters. In the 1630s in Rome
he perfected a technique for the representation of
light and atmosphere in landscape so sophisticated
that his art remained the crucial influence in
European, Australian and American landscape
painting for two centuries. This example, painted on a small copper panel, is a
pastoral landscape – an idealised view of the life of
a goatherd as he lazily guards his flock in a setting of
ravishing natural beauty. The effect of early morning
light filtered through haze over a tranquil stretch of
water is studied with extraordinary delicacy. -
