Kevin Kou Diasporic transvergence
A group’s culture is a sociocultural construct to be celebrated with one's 'own' people. Bound by a sense of belonging to a collective, it would be anomalous to be part of the 'other'. My body of work, Diasporic transvergence, is based on my experiences. It is a series of graphite drawings of culturally Chinese items, but expressing a sense of disconnect from them. The warped, marbled motif is intended to erase the physicality of the objects, representing a sense of inherent cultural displacement which cannot be undone through material objects.
