Kendrick Cheung Urban metamorphosis

The different types of media in my body of work represent the evolution of New York and Hong Kong, and therefore of eastern and western societies. In the outer layer, 1880s infrastructure expresses a faded and distant past. The deliberate tear in the middle creates jagged edges, referencing societal flaws. In the next layer I use brandings, streets and building styles of the 1950s to explore cultural differences. In the internal layer, my intent in using full colour is to suggest the presence of cultural fusions. Urban metamorphosis communicates a century of cultural development and urbanisation, emphasising the journey that has led to the present moment.
