Why have the fears that were once instilled in our cave-dwelling ancestors lingered on long after their source – the physical threat – has ceased to exist? This is the nonsensical nature of Phobias. The most effective way to nullify a phobia is by repeatedly exposing oneself to the fear in a safe and controlled way. In my body of work I combine the welcoming bedroom setting with confronting images that may trigger intense distress, normalising the source of fear and diminishing the influence of phobias on our daily lives. Soft serenity invalidates the fear and exposes the ‘phobia’ for the charlatan it is.
