Here I have examined issues from my Indigenous culture, past and present; the symbols represent historical events and those from my personal journey towards self-acceptance and understanding. I have incorporated traditional Aboriginal artmaking techniques into more contemporary, bold and gestural brush strokes to illustrate my Indigenous experience. We cannot change or forget the past, but I look forward to a positive future. I have appropriated Basquiat’s expressive and emotive style to link the similarities between our cultural experiences.
