We acknowledge the Gadigal of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the Country on which the Art Gallery of New South Wales stands.

Regional engagement

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is dedicated to serving the widest possible audience as a centre of excellence for the collection, preservation, documentation, interpretation and display of Australian and international art, and a forum for scholarship, art education and the exchange of ideas.

Through our website, regional users can access the Art Gallery’s collection online and request digital images of artworks for a range of uses. Using our online databases you can do your own research.

We have a lending program making our collection accessible to regional galleries and audiences across the state, and a touring exhibition program which includes an annual tour of finalists from the Archibald and Wynne Prizes.

A wide range of merchandise and publications from the Gallery Shop can be bought online and delivered to your door.

The Art Gallery also supports the needs of students and teachers from school communities in regional New South Wales through a variety of learning programs and free online learning resources – including Inside ARTEXPRESS.

You can watch videos, listen to audio and read articles via the Watch, listen, read section of our site. And you can also find us on Google Arts & Culture.

Regional Engagement Plan 2022–24

The Art Gallery is recognised for delivering successful and comprehensive regional engagement programming and for our strong ongoing relationships with diverse partners across the state.

Our Regional Engagement Plan 2022–24 sets out where we will focus our efforts to expand and deepen our connections and collaborations with metropolitan, regional and remote communities across NSW. It outlines five core focus objectives:

  • Partner – Nurture existing relationships and develop new connections with cultural, community and educational organisations by partnering and collaborating on exhibitions, programs and projects.

  • Exchange – Inform and shape collaborations and exchanges of knowledge, skills and practice, working with cultural, community and educational organisations.

  • Creative learning – Deliver an art education program of sustained excellence and relevance for the NSW education audience to ensure equitable access and meaningful engagement for all.

  • Grow – Grow diverse audiences through inclusive, accessible and engaging exhibitions and programs that connect communities across the state to artists and the Art Gallery’s collection. Develop comprehensive creative offerings onsite, offsite and online for all audiences.

  • Support – Secure and grow sustainable financial resources from government and private sources to deliver the ambitions of this plan and provide ongoing support for the Art Gallery’s regional engagement program and its stakeholders across NSW.
